beautifully shot great score gorgeous colors and very compelling & dramatic but the nuance i was hoping it had was taken away from a little by the sudden swing to benitez after one speech. obviously i can’t relate to its discussions of faith but unfortunately you can’t extricate the flaws and crimes of the catholic church from a movie about the catholic church and its politics so whether a woke pope will do colonial missions is kind of shallow

you know how some movies are love stories to hometowns or regions. this was a hatestory to LA. “a love story in the city of dreams” where the happy ending is the dream and reality is being consumed by jealousy and clawing for fame and money so violently that love is shredded to pieces in the process

it is overwhelmingly obvious when a director gets off on rape scenes. obviously technically very well made; kubrick was experienced by this point. the story would have needed to be extremely good to make up for how voyeuristic the rape scenes (plural) were and how shallow and unnecessarily sexualized the women were, but unfortunately the story was incredibly slow and unengaging with little real meaning to it.
