A film where the execution gets in the way of what could have been an interesting premise.
Storytelling isn’t always about the most probable; it can be the improbable and the impossible - as long as we believe the characters in each moment are pushed to their limits trying to reach that goal.
Nostalgia doesn’t hurt either, and Top Gun: Mavrick uses it to hurt the character as much as it does to remind us of a loved story from almost 30 years ago. It can tip a little too far on occasion, but not so much it’s not forgivable.
It’s one hell of a fun ride.
There was an interesting philosophical idea buried in the story, but the film suffered from two leads who had no charisma or chemistry with each other, even in scenes where it was clear from the writing that romance was the intent. It was also a struggle to buy the initial set up. Instead of tension this for me was a slog.
Under “The Bombardment” on Netflix; a story based on true events when a WWII bombing mission mistakenly hits a school in Copenhagen. Beautifuly shot and lit, the moments we see from the characters lives never quite become fully realized and instead they have a dream-like vignette quality as a backdrop to tragedy.
