Long story short, Wonka is a charmingly whimsical stocking-stuffer of a film. Scratch the surface and there’s not much underneath, but the first layer is satisfying and tasty enough.

A masterclass in saying everything through saying nothing, in showing and not telling, Wells’ new drama Aftersun follows Sophie trying to bridge the gap between the father she knew and the man she didn’t. While initial impressions can feel underwhelming, the film leaves an irrefutable melancholic taste in the mouth, supported by incredible performances from Mescal and Corio. When all is said and done, Aftersun’s lens of childhood ignorance is the unexpectedly perfect vehicle to understand the heavy anguish Mescal brings to this role.
