Sick, twisted and repulsively captivating.
There is something that David Lynch films manage to cultivate within the audience that not many others are capable of doing: they hold the viewer in what feels like a horribly intriguing nightmare at all times. The entire movie (from the first second to its subtitles) seemed like a surreal hypnosis; one that couldn’t be escaped. Despite the film’s compelling visual appeal and a generally captivating narrative, with many tense and attention gripping scenes, I believe the unnecessary subplot of a “romance” like relationship between a 12-year old girl and a grown man ruined this film a little for me. I understand that Léon did not reciprocate the feelings to Mathilda, yet I believe that including the idea alone was slightly unnecessary and definitely made me feel rather uncomfortable watching several scenes of the film.
