This movie really crystallized a “Del Toro” film, especially following up from Cronos/Mimic. The films intro acted as a perfect way into the world, setting up the right amount of tension that the film then maintained throughout (unlike Cronos which gave away too much from the jump). The supernatural horror experienced by the kids was classic Del Toro approach to ghosts and hauntings, and the internal world of the orphanage (and the horrors there in) worked beautifully with the horrors of a bloody end to civil war and conflict.
Funny, fast paced, and salient. Pacing wise is a more traditional whodunnit than Knives Out and it makes the movie a less tense, but very well done. sequel. The cultural commentary is a little on the nose but delivered with enough wit to work without becoming trite. Janelle Monáe’s performance in particular is a 15/10 and the way she plays a character within a character is A+. A little more Agatha Christie-like than it’s predecessor overall but an incredibly fun ride.
