This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
this movies worst sin is that its unbelievably boring. a shitty videogame movie where matpat says “thats just a theory!” and the FNAF animatronics build pillow forts after brutally mauling several people is a fucking blast, matthew lillard is kitschy and fun to watch - but unfortunately most of the movie is a drab family melodrama that simultaneously exists purely within the realm of camp, but also takes itself way too seriously to be charming - with the budget to boot.
"Gummo" is a difficult watch.
Not necessarily because its disturbing - though it can be - but its certainly not as disturbing as some other films. What makes Gummo hard to watch is the pervasive sense of dread that runs through its short hour and a half long run time - with long shots of silence, the tension that feels like its about to break out at any moment, or its nihilistic outlook on American life in poverty.
"Gummo" loosely…
"Or, Bob Dylan's Identity Crisis"
I tried writing notes when watching the movie again to really nail down what I like about it so much, but that was difficult because the movie is so disjointed it's impossible to take your eyes away without saying "Wait, what's happening now?" but also because its virtually impossible to fully understand the movie in a way that comes out a cohesive whole.
There should be a clarifying statement here: This is a 5 star…
An interesting concert film of the 3 newport folk festivals from 1963-1965, there's a lot to like here if you like the music, along with the tertiary footage surrounding the acts. Something very charming and innocent about this time in history, you really get the sense that these poor bastards thought their music would change something. Of course, the primary reason to watch this is Bob Dylan's 1965 Electric Set, which basically split musical history in half. Pre-Electric Dylan and Post-Electric Dylan. That's the whole reason I watched it. 60 years later and even I'M piffed that the set was so short. What gives!
