Kristen Stewart is casually charismatic (and openly sexual) as always, Katy O’Brian is ripped but vulnerable and has some of the drifter pluck of Sandrine Bonnaire from Agnes Varda’s “Vagabond”… and old Ed Harris still makes a good creepy villain; the script is twisty enough and the lesbian elements front and centre for once; you really root for these two characters and their messy situation since they are the only good-hearted…

“Inside Llewyn Davis” may be the far more artistic folk singer movie, as are “No Direction Home” (the Scorsese documentary about Bob Dylan) and Todd Haynes’ “I’m Not There” (in which 6 different actors portrayed an aspect of Dylan) but James Mangold’s classical Hollywood biopic is the most straightforwardly accessible and moving of the bunch… for me, anyway. For me, it is maybe the ultimate movie so far about not quite being able to fit in to family traditions that may have surface meaning but to those locked inside the formalities, these machinations are utterly meaningless if one does not care much for what they represent.
