The ending credits indicate this movie was based on a 1992 essay titled, "The Last Hippy"
This is a fascinating story of the power of music and the mind; however, JK Simmons is the only clear melody in this ensemble. Writing was forced and choppy. And editing was very poor. Clear jumps in plot will little explanation - seemed to be an attempt to move the plot along but with little explanation.
I recommend you read the essay to get inspired.

Don’t know much about Japanese culture but from what I do know, many are isolated in a very technically advanced nation. Had to look it up, but in 2014 (probably about the time this film was being pitched), there were 70 suicides every day in Japan. Regardless of the causes, it would seem that a disconnection to community and family and something larger than ourselves would somehow be related.

The Ten Commandments 1956
Finished first half - at 3hr40min - it’s a slog. Watching movies from this era just shows how much movie making has changed. The spectacle has been redefined. I’m sure for the time of it’s release, the shear size and scope of the project was record breaking.
