i get why someone wanting students to begin approaching documentaries as rhetorical/ideological works would use something like this as part of that longer conversation. i can also see why he'd say that morris was "cursed" by this film actually doing/changing something in the world. seeing this after the fact makes "the act of killing" (which was, tbf, exec produced by morris) seem less surprising and daring and genre-/form-bending (though it's still all of those, probably) and instead almost inevitable (if not it, than something else, etc). gonna try to watch more morris to see what he does elsewhere
as far as guys putting their therapy on screen goes, doing it to help your friend who can't remember the day he lost the use of his legs in an explosion remember that day is one of the more generous motivations. as a result this goes down smoother than what i watched of men did. in the q&a after, mendoza talked about it as a tool for bridging conversational gaps between veterans and non-veterans. asa non-veteran, i get the impression…
