A beautiful rending of complex, frustrating and and somewhat unlikeable characters. Olivia Coleman/Jesse Buckley character’s relationship to womanhood and motherhood is not one I have seen before on screen. Both their performances felt raw and claustrophobic, which Maggie Gyllenhaal was able to artfully match to the visual language of the film.
Also more of Ed Harris and Olivia Coleman dancing would be great
Watched in theater - a warm encapsulation of that type of crush we all had growing up on our babysitters or older siblings friends. If you allow the nostalgic perspective that PTA brings to this film to be the center, aka Gary idealizing an older woman, than I was able to enjoy the film. On the flip side, as a female in my 20s, every choice of Alainas makes me highly uncomfortable.
Overall - a highly enjoyable and funny hang out movie with an absolute heat check of a performance from Tom Waits and Bradley Cooper.
