The Counselor 2013
I watched this again for the first time since 2013. The core themes are compelling, especially around the cartel’s business of brutality. The septic truck scenes especially give us glimpses of what this film could have been. Instead, it is filled with didactic stand ins for philosophical ideas rather than distinguishable characters. Also, a lot of distracting “gynecologic” references. Hand this to a script pruner and a more inspired director. What if…

Lawrence of Arabia 1962
I’m not sure why this movie gets called a white savior film. It’s very clear that Lawrence saves nothing. He tries to be a messiah, but megalomania will only take you so far. Though he tried to rise above the larger forces at play, he ultimately served their interests and was cast out the moment his part was over. In the end, Lawrence belongs nowhere. No one truly understanding him, himself included. The only thing he keeps is his hero’s moniker, and the knowledge that he is no hero.

This movie perfectly fits my wheelhouse. Christopher Nolan, nuclear physics, complex moral questions. Also, omg it’s gödel walking with einstein. Omg feynman is playing the bongos. Hehe atmosphere has nonzero probability of going brr? Time to make a bigger bomb. I am hopelessly unapologetically biased and I cannot even hope to give a fair assessment of this film.
