Sometimes I like to watch a movie. I might even watch two or three. You can't stop me.

Sometimes all we're in the mood for is a good old-fashioned spy thriller, courtesy of Steven Soderbergh. Tightly paced, smartly written, and all around enjoyable to watch.

Feels like Bong Joon Ho watched Starship Troopers and Edge of Tomorrow and just had to sprinkle them into his Snowpiercer followup.

The political satire is blunt and goofy as ever - it might not be everyone's cup of tea, which is understandable, but I had fun with it on a meta level.

The movie surpassed Snowpiercer in its characters. Mickey's arc is simple but effective, and Pattinson does a hell of a job. The side characters were (for the most part) entertaining but realistic. Somehow despite the jarring tonal shifts it still felt like a cohesive story, and one that was super fun to watch.

Excellent movie. The acting and cinematography are great, that goes without saying. In the first half it echoes other historical dramas (The Pianist and There Will Be Blood, of course), setting up a sinister and oppressive atmosphere. By the intermission I was really bracing for emotional impact. But the second half ends on such an uplifting note I'm surprised it doesn't come off as sappy. A testament to how great art outlives the violent and abusive cycle of the society that creates it.

Yes, Denis Villleneuve's Dune is an objectively better movie. But I have to admit, Lynch's Dune has an undeniable charm that can only be produced by filmmakers who love their craft. The costumes and set design are great, the special effects are dated but surreal in Lynch's typical style. The Harkonnens are stupidly entertaining and the rest of the cast don't do so bad either. I would say the editing is the movie's biggest flaw - the conversations are paced…
