Loved so much about this movie. The visuals are incredible, the central relationships are fantastic, and score, the vibe, the originality... all terrific.
But the thing that holds it back from perfection for me is the last 10-15 minutes or so, when we suddenly get a villain (a fairly one-dimensional one), violence, and a new conflict that wasn't really part of the rest of the movie.
The perfect version of this movie, to me, would have found a way to…
Stellar craft from all involved - the direction and cinematography are strong, the score is intense and appropriate, and Phoenix's performance is predictably riveting and outlandish.
That said, it still is not obvious to me why this movie exists. The arc of the story isn't particularly interesting and I think it aspired to be far more thematically rich than I found it to be.
It doesn't really add much to the Joker mythos, as this story doesn't plausibly give you a backstory for the character we know from DC Comics and movies.
Bong Joon Hoo is an extraordinary filmmaker. Every frame and camera movement in this movie feels so thoughtful and deliberate. The film itself is hilarious, shocking, moving, and intelligent. The tonal shifts within it are superb, the performances are strong, and the ending is satisfying.
