Possession 1981
It’s always inspiring to see a film that’s able to execute a specific audience experience. This movie was maddening to watch, but its characters are literally going insane. There’s insanity in the camera work, the set design, the pacing. I felt on-edge and restless while watching this film, which was its intention, but not a fun experience for me. Very well done, love the practical effects, but I’ll definitely have to be in a specific mood to watch this all the way through

Nosferatu 2024
This film inspires me to watch more historical horror film. Eggars has such an eye for thorough production design, and some of these compositions feel especially epic when establishing new areas. Really beautifully shot movie but a little too long.

Akira 1988
Let me start off by saying the animation is amazing. Their creative set design and dystopian tone is exceptionally executed in my opinion. My main issue lies with its pacing, which really suffers in the 2nd act. I struggled to care for its characters and feel those emotional beats in between the sporadic editing style. I also didn’t care for the way women were treated in the film, though it’s a product of its time.
Still, I haven’t seen enough 80’s anime. Maybe after watching some more classics, I can appreciate more of the craft.
