This is my 2.5 watch (fell asleep during the first one and almost in the beginning of this one). It’s incredible how much this film could be summarized in about 20 minutes. The structure is very messy, although this is supposed to be another fun pulpy adventure of our “famous” protagonist Buckaroo Banzai and his gang, but actually nothing really happens until halfway of the film besides tons of exposition.

Viewed it via a projector which obviously enhanced the experience. This film is relentless, besides a few exposition moments each scene is either energetic or suspenseful. A lot of setups which pay off later on. Rachel Weisz is amazing and the Benny character (apparently played by Kevin J. O’Connor) is really one of my favorite comic reliefs in cinema history. The violence he endures throughout the film is hilarious. And per usual a masterpiece of a soundtrack by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith.

Funny how much this film talks about taking risks and doing things “your way” and the only risk they actually made is replacing the main character with a CGI avatar - the rest is either embarrassing or predictable. Even the song selection was boring. The film actually skips the most interesting period of his life artistically speaking. And the music sequences had no weight to them, the songs were overproduced… Way worse than expected.

Strictly from a documentary film point of view this film takes a bit to get going but its last half hour is one of the most incredible I’ve seen. An entire roller coaster of emotions.

From an Israeli point of view this film demonstrates perfectly how most people just aspire to live in peace and quiet (beside those whose only aspiration is to cause chaos and death).

Hopefully this movie will make a lot of noise.
