Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans 1927
this movie sways the emotions of audiences almost a century later—it gets to you despite all of its moral conundrums. it doesn’t shy away from the suffering the man inflicts upon his wife, yet it enchants you into rooting for his redemption anyway. there’s much more to this story than reinforcing hegemony. when you take the director’s own queerness into account it becomes clear: this is an outsider’s perspective on heterosexual marriage, on the wrongdoings of husbands, and in a way it guides them to hold gratitude for their marriage and their wives.
