A touching silent short film with gorgeous animation. The expressiveness of the characters stays just this side of cartoon-y and, with the help of some dream sequences, allows the film to feel richly textured without any dialogue. Love to see a story about a Black family and a wheelchair user that is ordinary and untroubled by racism or stereotypes.
A contemplative portrait of the filmmaker’s grandfather at the end of his life. He is industrious and full of life and opinions, especially about his granddaughter‘s screenplay. Even though he doesn't seem to acknowledge it, the two have quite a bit of intimacy as she helps him with daily tasks. A lovely tribute to a man who is both ordinary yet fascinating.
Aside from the overwhelming heterosexuality of the story (the protagonist has to be paired off in the end), I love to see a film from 1921 about a man learning empathy from the women in his life and a woman detective finding female friendship and nuance in rural Tennessee.
An excellent portrait of a comedian turning the worst experiences of her life into healing comedy. At first I was worried it wasn’t going to be very gay, but then the romantic and family planning storylines picked up in the second act. I was especially interested in the storyline about her as a single queer woman considering having a child through a surrogate - I’ve never seen that before. And points for creative use of text when they couldn’t video a key stand-up performance.
