  This movie goes farther than most in addressing the causes of the witch burnings, namely men's fear of women and their power, and ends in a tragic no-win situation, where the women nevertheless get to make a choice about their death, which is a kind of a victory, perhaps the only victory possible in this situation.   voyeuristic, too long, and too repetitive, but I give it three stars for the haunting images that will stay with me and being way ahead of its time. Also, I qualify the "voyeuristic" with the caveat that the scene with the masks points to the voyeuristic hypocrisy of society towards the so-called mad. I loved the dancing woman.
