Disjointed thoughts walking out of the theater:
Really made me wonder how things could have been so different for me. What if my grandfather had never left his village? What if my father had never left Mumbai? It was like seeing some alternate version of my life play back on screen.
I cried when I first heard the Marathi being spoken. It reminded me of my parents, my aunts, my uncles, my tais, my aaji, my ajoba. It was strange…
Gets all the parts right: beautifully filmed, sweeping score, strong performances. But Cars 2 did all that too. There’s a real heart to this one, and it’s so hard to explain but so evident when watched. Perhaps a consequence of being such a movie’s movie—what better to film than that which you’ve devoted your life to? And this is all managed to be said without getting overwrought, without any of the pretension of “film” (Letterboxd?) to carry with it. Ending lands softly and subtexts are thankfully left subtexted. Recommend
