Arthur 1981
Dudley Moore plays the best drunk in film, and John Gielgud perhaps plays the best snob. While some judge the merits of this film on those accomplishments alone, these two actors - along with the direction and writing - imbue their characters with so much life that their pleasures and fears become the audience's. We gleefully drown sorrows with Arthur and stoically mask pain with Hobson. We mourn, and we fall in love. This is a human-scale comedy, despite its lavish settings and wealthy trappings, and it's made all the funnier and more poignant because of that relatability.

What About Bob? 1991
Neither a comedy classic nor a wholly rebellious one, it nevertheless is a movie that I share with my dad. We've been watching it for so long that it is ingrained in our relationship - with the script seeping its way into our everyday speech ("So you're Betty?") - and it's always a treasure to watch it with him and laugh with him.
