Fortnite, the movie? Hit tracks and characters running their legs off, scaling mountains, and sniping people from 100 yards away. Sometimes all at once. While holding two guns! No wonder I loved it at age 14.
At 44 though, it feels like half the film is missing. Mann’s ambition is not nothing but the story is wildly out of sync with how good it looks. Just a frantic rush to get to the final line.
The movie opens with an effective ghost story. A bearded old sailor delivers the matter-of-fact details of a ship crash long ago, to a group of kids around a campfire. It sets up things nicely—beware the fog—but it does so at the cost of skimming the edge off the movie. The Fog plays out in a somewhat quaint, straight-forward manner.
