Chaos, aimless debauchery and the slow methodical annihilation of the self. Is it an America rendition for a cry for help or just what Faces appeals to depict as a cry for help?

Absolutely difficult, both in its subject matter as well as it’s style. But that’s the cinema-verite of Cassavetes. His films are no dinner party. Or rather, they are a dinner party, stripped of its veils of pageantry and niceties.  A real smorgasbord of emotions and behaviors, all…

For me, this film is everything that the film Se7en couldn’t represent. While Fincher’s beloved genre piece on the philosophical bearings of murder can leave a lot to be desired, focusing more on the shock and wow factors than the underlying origins of violence’s cyclical nature. Cure provides a meditation on those very ideas. Instead of dirt and grime and blood being characters they are small notes at a more interesting idea of repressed emotions in the subtext of cultural…

The unification of all humans into a singular, apathetic space free from pain, worry, ecstasy. Free from the human experience. And Evangelion, I think, maybe more than anything, is dedicated to exploring the ways the human experience is truly truly awful. Its potential kinetic energy to swing one way or another, abundance or starvation of meaning, is the true fundamental flaw of our own design. And humans attempting to be God, by recreating its image and power and resources to…

    I hate myself.

    THE BEAST

But maybe I can learn to like myself one day.

    THAT SHOUTED

Maybe it’s okay for me to be here. The only person I can be is me.

    “I”

    I’m me.

    AT THE HEART

I want to be myself! I want to be here!

    OF THE WORLD

Congratulations, Shinji. The first step toward self acceptance is indeed self discovery.

I love when an older movie doesn’t seem to show its age. At least in terms of technical and narrative execution. Movies that have stories, and cinematography and editing that can hold a viewers attention no differently (and sometimes more effectively) than modern standards today.

I don’t believe this is a horror movie. More like a haunting tragedy, or a haunted tragedy. Metaphor spills out of this thing in every frame. From the moving of grass as the wild winds of…

    Sasquatch Sunset

    ★★★★½

Going into this, I half expected it to be a simple documentary slice of life style picture about Sasquatches. Using its premise as gimmick to tell a strange, static story. Allowing the weirdness to do the heavy lifting.

What I experienced instead was a very well crafted look at the human story, the human condition. The Sasquatch element isn’t a gimmick but rather serves to hyperbolize or heighten an idea that could work well without it.

    I see Ari Aster…
