Just such a straightforward Music Biopic™.

Very disappointing to watch a film about a groundbreaking and polarising artist be so limp and flat. The filmmakers are trying to portray this image of a tortured genius enigma, but do it through a straightforward telling of the events as they happened. It has nothing new or interesting to say.

Timothée does a good Dylan speaking impression, and a fantastic Dylan singing impression. Honestly amazing how he carries most of the songs in…

    The Brutalist

This film is long. But honestly, I was locked in right from the beginning. Very few films can get away with a 3hr35min runtime and not feel needlessly indulgent, but Corbet pulls it off here with a deftness that really is impressive. How they made this for under $10mil and in less than a month is beyond me.

Things can feel rather clinical; in the first half especially, I was never not aware that the characters were talking directly into a camera rig, or that Elwood's voice was…

    Criterion Challenge 2022: 1/52

    "Ma-Sheen!"
    "Malk-atraz!"

What a way to start off the challenge. A fever-dream cocktail: 1 shot surrealism, 2 shots existential terror (add a dash of comedy for those inclined), shake over ice and fill the glass up with John Malkovich.

There's so much going on here; the desire and effects of fame, the lengths people go to for (literally) 15 minutes of it, the separation of art from the artist, and whether that's even possible. It's so…
