    Soft & Quiet

    ★★★½

It's hard to say you 'liked' a film like Soft & Quiet. It is brutally uncomfortable to watch. The less you know going in, the more this film will hit you like a brick once the realisation comes (which is actually quite early). The acting is brilliant, and the one-take realtime aspect of the delivery makes it all hit even harder. Especially once events begin to spiral out of control. And spiral they do, to some of the most disturbing scenes…

    New Life

    ★★★½

New Life is one of those films that's starts out as one thing — a simple thriller about a fugitive and the person hired to chase them down — that slowly, as the story's view widens, evolves into something totally different, something a little more terrifying. Thoroughly enjoyed this quiet little gem that, at just under 90 mins, tells a great story without overstaying its welcome.

Takeshi Miike's "Lumberjack the Monster" — surreptitiously released a month or so ago on Netflix — deserves more of an audience than it has received. Although the big reveal isn't exactly an enormous surprise, Miike still manages to inject a lot of his usual gruesome flare into this unorthodox, and existentially philosophical, serial killer thriller. Well worth a watch.

    The Assignment

Revenger AKA The Assignment… Walter Hill is better than this. Sigourney Weaver is better than this. Heck, even Michelle Rodriguez is better than this deeply flawed, cliched, over-acted and slightly trans-offensive B-grade thriller that wouldn't have been good in the late 80s let alone 2016. Just awful.
