A three-star rating is a bit generous here (the stellar cast makes it seem as if the film is better than what it is). With all that gesticulating and barely intelligible talk, Sean Penn looked like he was a quarterback calling the most complicated of audibles.
Barry Pepper has always been a terribly underrated actor; although the film is nothing special, it was great to see him in a lead role!
An exceptional film that brilliantly captures the uncertainty that plagues and defines human life. Nebraska reminds us how our decisions - especially our most significant ones - are both grounded in contingency and at the mercy of chance. Although no one really knows what the hell they’re doing or where the hell they’re going, it’s safe to say that we all deserve a new truck and air compressor. Every town, no matter how small or depressing, is going to have an Ed Pegram and a Blinker Tavern. Good to see a visual representation of what must of inspired Springsteen to sing about Nebraska, too.
