    The epitome of a pretty good movie. The suspense was effective, but the pacing needed some work. Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain give perfectly decent dueling performances, and they both make it easy to get invested in their characters and their stories. The main issue I have with the film, though, is that it feels like everyone involved kind of gave up on a great idea and kind of went through the motions of making this movie instead of really trying to make it great. I wish it really delivered production-wise for how interesting the plot was.

    A huge disappointment. X was an amazing suspenseful slasher, and Pearl was a gorgeous prequel (and one of my favorite films, horror or otherwise, of all time). What a terrible way to end a killer franchise. The plot was severely underdeveloped, which made the whole movie feel low stakes.     The Substance for the opposite demographic. Deserved at least an Oscar nod for Best Actress, Supporting Actress, Song, or Cinematography. Just a cute, fun time, even if it wasn’t the most incredible film overall.

    Not as horrendous as everyone said it was, but still quite bad. I feel like it’s killed by its existence as a musical. The acting was relatively decent across the board, but no one gave a standout performance. The controversy surrounding the Best Actress versus Best Supporting Actress campaigns is very valid, as Saldana had more screen time, but both she and Gascón felt like the principle character inconsistently throughout. It was never clear whose story the movie was telling.…
