It scratches an itch that some might have for masturbatory special effects, but don’t expect much as far as story goes. The basic premise dances around the same machine bad but maybe machine good spill we’ve seen a million times before. As far as Jennifer Lopez goes, she sure seems to be pretty emotional and hysterical for someone who is supposed to be a calculated analytical genius.
Godfrey Reggio once told me that I can walk on water. For anyone who sees this film as an injunction against technology, you completely missed the point. The ailments of tech are obvious, but it is the children who decide the future. Reggio describes the film as both linear and non-linear, and I might describe it as cyclical. Great cast, beautifully shot, excellent special effects, absolutely bonkers script. It is a wonderfully cacophonous love letter to the low budget horror genre, and while it very much is one itself, this Troma entry feels in some way like an elevation.
