Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence 1983
Visceral, vulnerable, and utterly poetic. The kind of transcendent experience that breaches the traditional confines of film. Rest in power, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and thank you for all the beauty you gifted us.

Kid Creole, DNA, Tuxedomoon, and James White footage from this era in this quality is a rarity enough to justify a watch of this colorful time capsule of what I consider to be New York's second artistic renaissance. Basquiat is so charismatic and vibrant as the lead to make this jumbled, urban fairy tale an enjoyable and charming, albeit amateurish and incoherent, viewing. You can tell it's a labor of love with a lot of unfortunately unrealized potential.
