I'm Still Here 2024
I cried so much. a beautiful film testament to the strength of memory and archives as a form of justice against the horrible oppressive forces of the dictatorship in Brazil in the 70s, even if the film mainly portrayed a middle class family with more European ancestry.
“cuando desapareces a alguien y la familia no sabe dónde está, eso es tortura psicológica para la eternidad.”
at the end of the movie, an older Brazilian man stood up and shot his fist up in the air, yelling in Portuguese. The grandmas beside me consoled each other in their arms and everyone was crying, dabbing their tears.

Anora 2024
a fun watch esp with the old Argentinians around me who kept calling Vanya “hijo de puta” asksksk and applauding Anora’s bold mannerisms. I’m still thinking about the movie’s vulnerable ending with anora getting her main form of (sexual) power stripped away in the face of such a cold patriarchal capitalist reality, but I struggled to fully empathize with the flatness of her character.
ultimately this narrative was a voyeuristic sensational caricature of what sex work is, with superficial commentary…
