There's solely one reason why this is not a 5/5. Even though this is a top tier film with one of the most unique stories I've seen, it has one major flaw. It humanizes the Japanese to a point where the story is downright bias and one-sided. It didn't recognize any of the Japanese's war crimes in Burma. The kalagon massacre? All those labor camps? There's no sign of it anywhere. Instead we are met with the sight of tortured…

The more I think about it the more I like it.
It's artistically one of Scorsese's finest works. Profound Cinematography and some top notch performances. The story was very well written but there's one major flaw
Even though the film had a great score that fitted well with the environment, it wasn't emotionally deep. As a result some very profoundly melancholic scenes went by without actually feeling anything. I was kept at a distance from the drama.
Other than that the film is absolutely brilliant
