Wenders the wanderer and his errant camera have produced an homage to Japanese filmmaker Ozu, a favourite of the German director. His documentary Tokyo-ga (1985) is an exemplary portrayal of the Japanese master and his methods. Perfect Days, on the contrary, is an uncomfortable synthesis of the ever-mobile, exploratory approach so typical of Wenders, and the stasis of the Japanese films he so admires. Notwithstanding the wonderful acting, the soundtrack and many memorable moments, this is a hybrid that, ultimately, fails.

Our potential interest in and admiration for Ennio Morricone should be distinguished from Tornatore’s unimaginative and literal approach to his subject. Nevertheless, Ennio is full of fascinating details and clips from forgettable films unforgettably scored. It can - just about- sustain one’s interest for over two and a half hours.
