Half expected there to be a clear continuity with Yojimbo, like the local Hatamoto saying, “I heard you were dead, something-san”, but that didn’t happen. And man, those triumvirate plotters were as incompetent as is, but their subordinate proved a gullible sod as well… hmm, very spinoff-ish.

Yojimbo 1961
Years and years ago I happened upon the Prohibition era remake of this starring Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken. Utterly inferior of course, now that I’ve finally got round to watching my first Kurosawa. Jesus, how he choreographs a scene like the vandalism set pieces alongside the consistent katana slash-a-roos totally makes me get why he’s been so raved about. I suppose the infinite sum of homages I’ve screen-gawked at softens the appeal ever so slightly but for a first introduction I’m all in.

Beau Is Afraid 2023
Its length is a tad interminable, as indicated by departing cinema-goers. The ludicrous nature of its plot, be it priapic reveals or Dulux-based misunderstandings, are but absurdist manifestations of ol’ phobos… Joaquin Phoenix’s whiny, live-in-mom’s-basement vocal quality is actually a great asset for this most perturbed of protagonists.
