commentary on quite a number of things, but also stands up as a very rich and interesting biblical parable. there is the (somewhat obvious) discussion of capitalism, greed, american exceptionalism, and a hinted-at idea of manifest destiny (cf. daniel plainview buying up or forcing out all the inhabitants of new boston and building pipelines and railroads), but it really goes quite a bit deeper.
