The Japanese writer Natsume Sōseki had Ten Nights of Dreams, and Akira Kurosawa had his Eight Nights of Dreams. Originally, this film was supposed to have ten episodes, but due to budget constraints, two had to be cut.
The film can be seen as Kurosawa’s autobiographical work, covering themes of gods, spirits, humans’s life and death, while incorporating elements of traditional Japanese performing arts. In the final segment, the old man in the watermill village reflects Kurosawa’s natural and straightforward…
The scene where tsubaki petals fall into the pond is just beautiful. This movie really shows both the tough and gentle sides of Akira Kurosawa, along with his deep thoughts on bushido and the use of violence. His character and moral perspective make him not just a great samurai figure but also an incredible artist. I’m completely blown away by him, and this is a movie I could watch over and over again.
