as expected, del toro delivered a stunning and gory film as his directorial debut. a clever take on the vampire flick, cronos explores the importance of family and mortality through the consequences of using a beetle-like device that grants users vitality at the cost of their humanity. the fact that this lowkey feels like jojo's bizarre adventure compensates for thinly conceived characters and clumsy pacing. letterboxd wont let me give it a 3.75 so i will round up and give it a 4.
