Loved this very much. Maybe one of my favourite Coen Bros. films and much different from many of their canon. More overall melancholy feel to this with the grading and the way it’s lit. The Joycean cat narrative is an allegory for Llewyn in this story and there is some fantastic animal training on display. Cool to see a story of the nearly men and people on the cusp of that generation who never quite make it.

I have lots of thoughts on the dynamics at play with the lead characters here but I won’t do an essay. It could have been a stronger script, darker or with a little more edge to the risk that Romy was making but it petered away by the end.

What I will say is this film was oversold as an erotic thriller. It had its moments but ultimately people think it’s brave and that’s because there aren’t enough representations of kink and sub/dom play in mainstream cinema.

This is a very faithful rendering of the very powerful book by Claire Keegan.

The film feels cold, chilly and bleak. There is a real weight of heaviness throughout the film and Cillian Murphy wears that burden on his face. Even when he isn’t speaking he has the most astonishingly expressive face.

The horrors of passivity from the people around these institutions is almost as sinister as Emily Watson’s chilling portrayal of the head nun.

Not an easy watch but a very important one.
