  the script definitely does not which story it is trying to tell. avoids any tension or meaningful progression by an overreliance on songs. the musical moments are nice and fine and obviously expected but you barely have a movie in between all of the performances. unfortunately the female characters (including THE! joan baez) are criminally underwritten. but so is the whole movie - doesn’t really care to explore why bob dylan shifted from folk to rock, or his real frustration with the folk scene. a nice watch with some decent performances

  perfectly crafted to the point it’s shocking to think it was made in 2016, samantha robinson is *actually* perfect, but too long towards the end.
  i was debating how to rate this but i bumped it up a bit because even if the messaging can be confusing (to say the least) i think it presents a lot of themes and is fertile ground for lots and lots of discussion and analysis for gender and film studies (and i really loved the ending)

  “I admire you Noriko...” that beach scene is absolutely magical. It is really fascinating to see how Ozu is able to depict the changing condition of the woman in post-war Japan across his Noriko trilogy.
