Richard Farnsworth was born for this role, he delivers with such brutal realism as Alvin Straight, that I find his calibre of acting to be unmatched in American cinema (specifically under the department of "old geezer last time performances"). To me this is Lynch's love letter to what I would assume he deems the most positive aspects of the American spirit. The supporting cast just add to the films unrelenting sentimentality for this amazing story based on reality. The dialogue is genius because it doesn't ever seem written.
