The Substance 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Literally insane. On so many levels. I think this is a classic and couldn’t stop thinking that the whole time. Demi was fantastic and the whole thing was so over the top and in your face (especially the message) it was almost infuriating, but it just made it such a standout. You can physically feel the desperation leaking through the screen throughout the entire film.

Feel like they could’ve done more with the symbolism/church motif - it came off as predictable and almost silly to me at times, but I do think it was interesting to hear the Bible references, etc. Lee’s lack of emotion irritated me and I can’t really explain why. Really lost me with the whole shoot the doll in the head and the demon (black smoke) is released. Took what felt like a movie focused on realism with the influence of dark forces to a fantastical and almost comical level. Would probably watch again though

The House That Jack Built 2018
I really enjoyed the way they played into Jack’s mental state; his apathetic narration juxtaposed with the suspense and horror of the victims creates a disturbing unease for the audience that is present throughout the entire film, while at the same time allows you to almost empathize with him. Perfect addition of gore, but it doesn’t take center stage. Exactly what I want from a horror/thriller film. Will be watching again
