I like how I’ve finally got my wish that the Christmas special isn’t written by the current showrunner - so RTD just gives it to the former showrunner. Eh, we’re halfway there at least.

Well this was Moffat using his usual bag of tricks but since I don’t see them much anymore they’re more welcome again now, especially in a story with its heart on its sleeve as much as this. The Time Hotel concept was great if a little…

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

    Oh thank God.

Although Were-Rabbit and Loaf and Death did come out during my lifetime, this is my first time watching a new Wallace & Gromit film on broadcast with everyone else. I’ve just been used to already having their films seeped into the British consciousness, so seeing one of these before that happens is very cool indeed.

I was so worried that this was going to be a limp retread that didn’t get the essence of W&G, especially since the…

I'm not acquainted with Soderbergh's filmography at all (only seen Logan Lucky and even that was just the once) but I really enjoyed this. Heard his one in January wasn't that great but if this is him on-form then I can see how people keep coming back for more - he really lets everyone act here but it's also got a classic pulpy feel to it in its approach to its mystery and the winding plotting, particularly in that third act which really had me gripped.
    Short but certainly sweet.

This had glimmers of what the creative premise could've been in its first act, but the moment that a robot started singing The Clash's cover of I Fought The Law while Chris Pratt nods along with his stupid haircut, I knew this was the generic Netflix movie crap I was fearing it would be. The Russos are smarter than this, and so are the screenwriters Markus and McFeely, but this reminds me of their screenplay for Thor 2 - it's…

    Next Goal Wins

I can totally understand the more muted reception that Next Goal Wins has been getting. It’s a much more formulaic story than a director like Waititi normally tells. After all, he’s the man responsible for concepts like a mockumentary about vampires house-sharing, and a young German boy having Hitler as an imaginary friend. This underdog sports comedy seems more simple than his normal wheelhouse. That and because of his immense exposure and the amount he has coming up in the…

Well that got the predictable disinterested shrug out of me. Didn’t these used to be terrifying back in the day?

Gatiss, you seem like a really nice guy, but give someone else a shot.
