Electrocuting an Elephant 1903
After a couple of watches, I now understand what the initial purpose of such an avant-garde film. Obviously, it is a metaphor for the apparent inescapability of abuse. The elephant is being led in shackles that it could easily free itself from if it was given the encouragement, much like the shackles of an abusive partner. The electricity itself is an obvious metaphor for the abuse, while the toppling of the elephant represents the descent into further mental and emotional torture. My only gripe is that an elephant is a pitiful metaphor for women, and a different animal should have been electrocuted instead.
