  A Man Escaped is a beautifully minimal film, Bresson manages to create a devastatingly tense atmosphere with next to nothing, not even the face of a guard. every footstep heard, every scrape at the door, every resounding clank of the metal hooks is genuinely paralyzing. this is purely cinema slight of hand, magic is created out of thin air.
