Was expecting this to fall short of the opus it’s being marketed as, but quite shocked at how poor it actually was. First half was okay but lacking in sauce, second half was godawful. Not even many awe-inspiring shots to make me glad I watched it in the cinema. 👎👎👎

Dahomey 2024
It’s tempting to want more from this, but really I think it’s just meant to be a snapshot of a moment, and its show-don’t-tell approach is perfect for that. Great soundtrack, too. I was engrossed throughout! Also, not sure if an intentional reference but the opening shot of the Eiffel Tower tat curiously (and appositely) echoes an episode from Teju Cole’s Tremor.

My First Film 2024
Was on board for the first half but it’s just soooo earnest. Partially watched this because saw the director said Holy Motors was an inspiration — could have taken more cues from that film, which takes its meta themes as an excuse for a romp which is completely enjoyable whether or not you get off on mythologising ‘cinema’. Turned me off in much the same way as The Souvenir Part II did (having loved Part I).
