Ash doesn’t reinvent the wheel or do anything astoundingly original - it unsurprisingly borrows quite a bit from the genre’s heavyweights and is packed full of tropes - but I’m very easily entertained by sci-fi horror, especially in outer space, so add in a Flying Lotus score (+ direction) & cool visuals and I’m seated. Plenty to criticize here but fun watch for me nonetheless.

I didn’t fully enjoy all of it, but this movie is so distressing and impactful at times that it leaves a unique mark. There is a lot substance to dwell on with heavy subject matter and some of it feels important while some of it feels self-indulgent and needlessly grim. In any event, Willem Dafoe elevates this film considerably, and makes it a very quality watch.

I didn’t find any of it to be funny, nor scary, nor particularly disturbing - not to say it needed to be one of those things in particular, but it would have helped me enjoy it a little more. I thought the story…
