My first Fassbinder. This is a film that still feels vital to me, in America in 2018. A lot of the racial tensions and situations seem to be applicable to comments I've heard from people even today. It manages to avoid cliche by showing oppression not only from society, but also from the two in the relationship. The cinematography is wonderful--Fassbinder's confidence in form is clear. I loved the wide shots and the feeling of emptiness that came from them. Fassbinder uses door frames, screens, and balusters to divide characters, trap them, or even to show moments of intimacy. Excellent stuff.

Gauche the Cellist 1982
What a lovely film. It’s not Takahata’s best film but it showcases a lot of what makes him a great director. It follows the cellist Gauche who has a unique style and potential but has not been able to harness it yet. His playing is scratchy, out-of-tune and rhythm, and lacking expressiveness.
