  under-fucking-rated. i was dreading this viewing given the general response, and maybe if i'd remembered it was THAT nicholson's kid i might've been irritated but if anything he reminded me more of orange county-era jack black. which i love. between that, the musical interludes, the kitchen blender approach to tone, all totally worked for me. i hated cocaine cowboy, but if it took that swill to get this one made i'll buy it on blu-ray.

  2 hours of a bunch of morons spouting folksy wisdom while mcdormand smugs around pretending to be the salt of the earth. there’s an interesting world of people and their lifestyle here, but the movie fails to examine them or truly understand them. instead, it practically deifies them, presenting these people as some representative of a "true america," as if being beaten down by a system of oppression is the only real way to live a life.
