It seems pretty clear to everyone who’s seen this, that if you tone down the Ruffalo/Collette stuff, there’s a really solid movie here. That’s not even to shit on their performances; they’re both quite funny. But they are the least interesting aspect of the movie and drive home the same point for the entire runtime. All things, clone, romance, sex, and more relationship-based are great. I like the creatures too! Steven Yeun is endlessly watchable. There’s a lot to like. I didn’t even mind the voiceover at all!

It’s pretty difficult to imagine how the nauseating visual style of Neon Genesis would translate to live action. Hideki Anno gamifies this puzzle, and employs every tool in his arsenal to nail it. The camera is (at times invasively) everywhere especially in the first 20 minutes. Anno is clear here that we are about to witness a flurry of shots, sounds, and techniques whose creativity (or familiarity if you’ve experienced NGE; see the train alarm or the cum in hand)…
