The Substance 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I loved The Substance. It is an aesthetic wonder - the colour, choreography, sound and set design are all sensational. It is also a cutting, well-observed satire of contemporary American culture. It is maybe ten-minutes too long but excess is part of the point. Demi Moore is excellent as an aging fitness guru!

Perfect Days 2023
I loved this movie. It belongs to a genre of films - like Jim J's Paterson - that embrace the small pleasures of everyday life and people making art earnestly and averagely. In Perfect Days there is also a fetishization of analogue technology (cassette tapes and film cameras) which I felt was pretty much made for me. The protagonist's life is work (cleaning toilets in Tokyo), taking pictures, reading books, and quiet routines of eating and wandering. I watched it at home with my cat on a quiet Sunday. Not the most profound or innovative of Wenders' films but truly lovely.
