This film could have actually centered Jules rather than being a white nationalist coded abuser’s PR campaign with a false promise. I find it especially harmful that the marketing clearly targeted queer viewers, yet they intentionally focused on romanticizing the abuser and fetishizing black suffering. Jokes on me because I appreciated several parts that touched on gender performativity, and how Preston’s clothes started changing near the end. All of these “bright spots” just caused greater disappointment once I saw the ending.
