  The story and the sound were too disturbing for me. A scene in particular almost had me fainting. I had to pause it for a night and then went back. Apart from that personal experience, The Girl with the Needle is an outstanding work of black and white cinema.

  A bold take on religious pressure.

  A young Turkish medical student called Enes Kara committed suicide in 2022. A video log and a written note were found after his death. He was an atheist who was forced (both by his family and economic conditions) to stay in a religious dormitory where daily life is strictly regulated according to Islamic rules. He was only 20 years old. His death has deeply hurt me and has stayed with me ever since.
